Three (out of five) Line Whip

Peninsula based dual accreditees – Dr Jon Goodman, head of the Postgrad School of Medicine, has a message for you about GIM training day attendance.

As you are aware, we have now completed Study Days in Plymouth and Truro and have learnt a significant amount from each.  It is clear that we need to ensure these days are well advertised to you in advance and the dates are available on the School of Medicine Website:

www.peninsuladeanery.nhs.uk/schoolofmedicine

We are aiming to ensure talks are delivered to an appropriate standard and that you have the opportunity for feedback.  It is my hope that the remaining days will be a great success.

I was concerned about the level of attendance at the day at the Royal Cornwall Hospital which in general was very successful.  This matter has been brought up for discussion at the Board of the School of Medicine and two of your Representatives were present.  The Board has passed a resolution that indicates that we would wish to see attendance at a minimum of 3 out of 5 days in order for a successful outcome at ARCP’s/RITA’s.  We’ve accepted that with Study Leave, Nights etc that 100% attendance is not possible though certainly this would be desirable.  Certificates of attendance will be sent after each Study Day and should be brought as evidence to your assessment in your Portfolio.

We are aiming to continue with the idea of trainee presentations, although there has not been a great deal of uptake of this as yet.  It would be my view that presenting at Study Days would be a good opportunity to enhance your C.V. and also a good forum for discussion of your work in the form of case presentation, research project, audit or review of the literature (not review of book as stated in error by the last email you received about this matter).  You will not be required to fill in a presenter biography as appended to the last email as I was concerned this might put people off.

These are your Study Days and I am very keen to get any feedback that will allow us to improve their quality.  We are aiming to provide a further 5 days in 2010 and one or two of these will be shared with Severn Deanery.

DATES FOR REMAINING 2009 STUDY DAYS:

EXETER – JUNE 25TH

BARNSTAPLE – SEPTEMBER 28TH

TORBAY – DECEMBER 18TH
